Marquette invites all students, faculty, staff and alumni to participate in programs to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from Tuesday, Sept. 15, through Thursday, Oct. 15.
Following are the scheduled events as of Wednesday, Sept. 16:
Monday, Sept. 21 through Friday, Oct. 2
- ‘America the Borderland’ exhibit
- Raynor Library
- “America the Borderland” is an exhibit profiling 10 “upstanders” who work with and serve migrants along the border town of El Paso, Texas. The accompanying multimedia examine various ways these individuals and organizations are symbolically building a new Ellis Island and breathing life into the very idea of America.
Friday, Sept. 25
- Orgullo Hispano March and Kickoff Celebration
- Depart from St. Joan of Arc Chapel at noon (rain location for kickoff is AMU 227)
- This two-part kickoff event begins with the Orgullo Hispano March beginning at noon, where attendees will carry flags representing Hispanic and Latine countries and cultures in a campuswide celebration of pride and heritage. The march will conclude on Ray and Kay Eckstein Common and lead into a kickoff celebration from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. featuring food, dance performances, Lotería and opportunities to connect with campus and community organizations. Families and parents visiting campus for Family and Parent Weekend are welcome to attend. The event is presented in partnership with the Hispanic Alumni Association, the Latinx Employee Resource Group and Campus Activities Board, and will feature performances by No Sé Latino Dance Club and MU Ballet Folklórico.
Thursday, Oct. 8
- Cultural cooking series: Puerto Rico
- 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the AMU Innovation Kitchen
- Join to make plantains two ways and learn more about Puerto Rican culture with Cecille Medina-Maldonado from Campus Ministry. More information, including registration, will be shared on the Office of Inclusion and Belonging Instagram.
Wednesday, Oct. 14
- Latin dance night
- 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the Union Sports Annex court
- Learn different Latin dance styles with Salsabrositas MKE. All dance levels are welcome.
Friday, Oct. 16
- Nuestra Herencia Ball
- 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Monaghan AMU Ballroom AB
- The Nuestra Herencia Ball is a semi-formal dance that celebrates Latine culture, beauty and joy. Gather in community and dance the night away. Dinner will be provided. RSVP is not required but encouraged; a form will be shared soon.
