Experience Washington, D.C., during Les Aspin Center May-mester

Students interested in spending time in Washington, D.C., without committing to a full semester can earn three credits through the Les Aspin Center for Government’s Summer 2027 May-mester, May 17-29.

The May-mester features a two-week intensive, in-person experience at the Aspin Center followed by three weeks of asynchronous online learning. Students will gain hands-on exposure to national institutions, historic sites and public policy discussions while experiencing life in the nation’s capital.

This summer, students can enroll in ASPN 4932-101: Politics of the American Revolution, taught by Sam Harshner. The course examines how competing ideas of freedom and equality have shaped American political debate throughout the nation’s history and continue to influence the present.

Students will take their learning beyond the classroom through visits to Independence Hall, Colonial Williamsburg, Mount Vernon and historic sites throughout Washington, D.C. The three-credit course also fulfills an ESSV2 requirement in the Marquette Core Curriculum.

The program costs $2,940 for three credits ($980 per credit), plus $800 for housing and program fees. Students are responsible for transportation to Washington, D.C., food and personal expenses. Aspin Center student housing is located four blocks from the U.S. Capitol and includes furnished apartments with kitchens, Wi-Fi and free laundry facilities. A pantry stocked with common food items and supplies is also available to participating students.

Students do not need to apply to the full Aspin Washington Internship Program to participate in the May-mester.

Interested students should complete the Aspin Center Programs application by April 1, 2027. Students are encouraged to consult with their academic adviser when planning summer enrollment.
