Structured Rubrics for Assessing Digital Dentistry Workflows in Dental Education

Abstract: Digital dentistry has rapidly transitioned from an emerging technology to a core component of predoctoral dental education, with intraoral scanning and computer-aided design (CAD) workflows now embedded across restorative and prosthodontic curricula. Despite this expansion, assessment of digital dentistry competencies often lacks structured, standardized frameworks within institutions, resulting in variability in how student performance is evaluated across courses and faculty, with wide variability in how scan quality, CAD design decisions, and digital workflow execution are evaluated. To address this problem, we developed structured rubrics for two core domains of digital dentistry: data acquisition and CAD. Rubric development was informed by consensus input from 12 faculty members with 5–20 years of experience in digital dentistry education and clinical implementation, reflecting common challenges observed across student-level digital cases.
Infrastructure of Ethics: How Publication Workflows Shape Ethical Expectations in Computational Research

Abstract: As computational research increasingly relies on large-scale, digitally generated data, concerns about research ethics have become more urgent. Yet beyond institutional oversight and informal disciplinary norms, comparatively little attention has been paid to the ethical infrastructures that shape researcher expectations within the publication process itself. This article presents an exploratory review of 191 computational journals and conferences to examine how ethics is communicated and operationalized through three components of publication infrastructure: public-facing author guidelines, manuscript submission workflows, and review procedures. We document the frequency, placement, and form of ethics-related prompts across these systems and analyze how they vary across subfields. Our findings reveal substantial inconsistency in how venues frame ethical responsibilities, with most offering only minimal or procedural disclosures and few integrating ethics meaningfully into review processes. We argue that these infrastructural gaps contribute to fragmented ethical expectations for researchers and limit opportunities for reflective practice. By mapping current practices, this work advances efforts to strengthen responsible computational research by illuminating how publication infrastructures—alongside institutional review boards and professional codes—play a critical role in shaping ethical reflection and accountability in computational research.
Three-Dimensional Displacement of Upper Cervical Vertebrae in Severe Mandibular Deviation Caused by Condylar Hyperplasia: A Tomographic Segmentation Study

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the three-dimensional angular displacement of the upper cervical vertebrae in patients with severe mandibular deviation (MD) due to condylar hyperplasia (CH), utilizing a computed tomography (CT)-based segmentation approach. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 50 patients with MD ≥ 6 mm caused by hemimandibular elongation (HE) or a hybrid form (HF) of CH. The skull, mandible, and cervical vertebrae were segmented using 3D Slicer software. Angular deviations were measured relative to the Frankfurt plane. Patients were categorized by the side of CH (right or left), and intergroup comparisons were performed using Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U tests. Spearman’s correlation analyses assessed associations between MD magnitude and cervical angles. Conclusions: Patients with CH and severe MD exhibit consistent patterns of 3D cervical displacement, particularly in lateral inclination and vertical movement, suggesting compensatory postural adaptations in the upper cervical spine.
Analysis of Clinical, Biopsychosocial Factors and Mmp3 Polymorphism in Women with TMD

Abstract: Objectives: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a multifactorial condition that significantly affects patients’ quality of life. This study investigated the association between clinical, biopsychosocial, and genetic factors, including the MMP3 rs679620 polymorphism, and TMD in women from southern Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional case–control study was conducted including 305 women, comprising 138 patients with TMD (disc displacement with or without reduction and arthralgia) and 167 controls without TMD symptoms. Conclusions: Clinical and biopsychosocial factors were associated with the presence of TMD in this female population, whereas the MMP3 rs679620 polymorphism was not. These findings support the multifactorial nature of TMD and suggest that biopsychosocial factors may play a greater role than the genetic variant investigated in this population. Due to the cross-sectional case–control design, the observed associations should not be interpreted as evidence of causal relationships.
