Marquette defeated Butler University in the schools’ blood drive competition organized through a partnership with Versiti. The campus community donated 547 total units of blood, 107% of the university’s goal.
These units will go toward helping over 1,600 local patients. In total, Marquette and Butler donated 965 units, which has the potential to impact over 2,800 lives. The universities exceeded their combined goal of 900 units.
Marquette hosted 17 blood drives on campus between September 2023 and April as part of the competition.
This was the second competition between Marquette and Butler, both members of the BIG EAST Conference for athletics. The Marquette community donated 434 units of blood during the 2022-23 academic year as part of the first competition.
This year’s competition featured friendly competition between the two universities’ dogs, both coincidentally named Blue. Marquette’s Blue, who serves as Marquette University Police Department’s community outreach dog, made multiple appearances at blood drives on campus.
