Marquette University mourns the loss of Dr. John D. Krugler

Marquette University mourns the loss of Dr. John David Krugler, longtime professor of history in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, who died on June 20, 2026, at the age of 85.

Krugler taught at Marquette for more than four decades and helped to establish the university’s public history program. Over the course of his 46-year career, he was a dedicated educator, adviser and scholar who was known for his commitment to working closely with students.

A historian by training, Krugler earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and published two books during his career: “English & Catholic: The Lords Baltimore in the Seventeenth Century” and “Creating Old World Wisconsin: The Struggle to Build an Outdoor History Museum of Ethnic Architecture.” Krugler will be remembered for his passion for history, sense of humor and deep connection to his students.

Krugler is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dee, children David Krugler and Katie Pospisil, grandchildren, siblings and other relatives and dear friends.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 11 at Wauwatosa Presbyterian Church. Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m., followed by a service at 4 p.m.
