Celebrate the opening of the new fall season at the Haggerty Museum of Art, exploring themes of personal reclamation, cultural identity, spiritual passage and connection across Africa’s many diasporas, on Thursday, Sept. 10, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Meet the curators and artists, enjoy seasonal refreshments and be the first to view freshly interpreted and newly-created works. Three new exhibitions invite a journey across multiple centuries and continents titled “The Otherworld is Home.” The title of the museum-wide presentation was inspired by the Yorùbá proverb, “Life is a journey, the otherworld is home” (ayé l’àjò, ọ̀run n’ilé).
The free-to-the-public opening reception features three interconnected exhibitions—”African Art: Ancient Roots, Enduring Values”; “Iké Udé: Sartorial Anarchy” and “Thresholds” — presenting works ranging from 15th-century Mali to new pieces by contemporary artists working in the United States.
Walk-ins are welcome. The event is co-hosted by the Milwaukee Art Museum’s African American Art Alliance.
