Marquette University mourns the loss of Eli Marten, assistant director of the Academic Resource Center, who died on Monday, June 8. He was 33.
Eli was a two-time Marquette graduate, earning his bachelor’s degree in Spanish and anthropology in 2015 and his master’s degree in student affairs in higher education in 2019.
His career supporting Marquette students began during his graduate studies, when he provided academic coaching in the Academic Resource Center. He returned to his alma mater in July of 2023 after previously serving as a student success adviser at Carthage College.
Eli was passionate about educational justice — inspired by his two terms with AmeriCorps as a college coach — and an unwavering advocate for Marquette students. He was particularly drawn to students who were struggling and in need of support.
“Those of us who worked alongside him will carry more than memories of his dedication,” said Erik Albinson, director of the Academic Resource Center. “We will remember his sense of humor, his kindness, and the warmth he brought to our team every single day. The Lemonis Center for Student Success was a richer place because of him, and the students he served were fortunate to have him. What he built here, and what he meant to the people he served, will not be forgotten.”
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, June 24, at 3:30 p.m. in the Lemonis Center for Student Success multipurpose room.
The Marquette community holds the Marten family, including his father, Dr. James Marten, professor emeritus of history, and mother, Linda, in its prayers.
A full obituary is available online.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Eli’s memory to Camp Manito-Wish YMCA. Condolences may be sent to james.marten@marquette.edu or by card to the Department of History.
