Dear Enrollment Management colleagues,
In reflecting on how to best structure this newsletter — the first of what I intend to be a recurring newsletter for the division — I was struck by how much time I spend counting down to future milestones. For some in this division, May 1 — the national commitment deadline for high school students to declare their enrollment plans — is significant, and we know there is less than two weeks until then. For others, May 10 (or 11) — this year’s commencement date— is a major milestone, and there less than a month until then! You might also be interested to know there are less than three months remaining until the Gift of Time begins. And then, of course, there are significant personal or professional milestones — upcoming birthdays, vacations, anniversaries and the like.
Recognizing how often we are looking ahead, my encouragement for all of us with this first newsletter is to remember the value of pausing and looking around. We have the opportunity to serve students and colleagues every day. I’m a firm believer that each day, we have the capacity to impact the lives of those around us. If we’re being honest, that impact can be either positive or negative, but is rarely neutral. So, as we enter the final stretch of the spring semester, it’s my hope that you all look around and feel a sense of connection — to our students, to each other, and to Marquette’s commitment to “serving God by serving our students and contributing the advancement of knowledge.”
In the moment
In this section in future newsletters, I’ll be asking our unit leaders to provide timely updates, highlights and/or reminders. For now, I’ll simply share a note of gratitude for the quality, breadth and depth of student-centered, mission-aligned work I see happening every day throughout the division. As we navigate new Executive Orders and other guidance from Washington, D.C., I also see our teams supporting our students on campus and abroad. We are recruiting the next class of undergraduates while simultaneously serving students experiencing personal and financial hardships, and our division is also helping the Marquette community send a new group of graduates out into the world in the hopes they’ll honor Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s call to “Go forth and set the world on fire.” It is remarkable, inspiring and often thankless work, so for today, I’ll close this section with a simple and sincere thank you for all you do!
Looking Ahead
Keep an eye out for a “Save the Date” for our fall division meeting. We always love seeing as many in-person attendees as possible, but we’ll also be sure to have a Teams option. Additionally, I hope to share a divisional org chart with you all in the next newsletter, and am also seeking out ideas for content for future updates. One item I’d like to introduce is a way of celebrating our colleagues birthdays and work anniversaries, so take a look at who all has already celebrated one of those things in 2025!
Finally, I encourage you to continue sharing ideas, feedback and insights with me — and with each other! My offer of pour-over coffee, loose-leaf tea, or simply getting together for a chat remains open! Reach out to Carol Chilson if you’d like to schedule a time to connect.
Thank you for all you do in shaping the future of our institution. Let’s continue to collaborate and make a lasting impact!
We are Marquette!
Sincerely,
Brian Troyer
