Celebrate Black History Month in February 

Marquette invites all students, faculty and staff to participate in programs to celebrate Black History Month.    

Email the Center for Engagement and Inclusion to add a program or event to the calendar.

Following are the scheduled events as of Friday, Feb. 9: 

  • Dynamic Range: Photographs by Bill Tennessen
    • Through May 12 | Haggerty Museum of Art
    • This exhibition of 50 photographs by Bill Tennessen highlights Milwaukee’s Black community from the 1980s to the early 2000s
  • Black at Marquette Lunch: Black History Month Kickoff 
    • Thursday, Feb. 1 | Noon to 1:30 p.m. in AMU 163 
    • Join the Center for Engagement and Inclusion and the Black Faculty and Staff Employee Resource Group for the annual Black History Month Kickoff Luncheon featuring food and community. Contact cei@marquette.edu with any questions. 
  • First Gen Friday Skate Night in collaboration with ASA and Black Orgs 
    • Friday, Feb. 2 | 5:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Butler Skate Rink 
    • Connect with the Marquette community through skating, music and food. RSVP is required. Contact cei@marquette.edu with any questions. 
  • National Black and African American HIV and AIDS Awareness Day 
    • Wednesday, Feb. 7 | 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the first floor of the AMU 
    • Staff will highlight the need to increase awareness and mobilize community involvement in combatting HIV among Black/African American people. Staff will also share how Marquette faculty support continuing HIV/AIDS research and opportunities to get involved in prevention work in Milwaukee. Contact the LGBTQ+ Resource Center with any questions. 
  • NAACP Presents: Wildin’ Out 
    • Friday, Feb. 9 | 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Weasler Auditorium 
    • Join for non-stop fun, insane challenges and epic surprises. Contact Olivia Ford with any questions. 
  • Women’s basketball’s Black History Month game 
    • Saturday, Feb. 10 | 2 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center 
    • Women’s basketball will highlight the Black Fives Foundation and celebrate some of Marquette’s Black student organizations during its game against Villanova 
  • BIPOC & LGBTQ+ workshop: “Exploring the &” 
    • Tuesday, Feb. 13 | 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Holthusen Hall 
    • Join a gathering for students identifying as BIPOC and LGBTQ+, questioning, and allied students to bring students together in honor of Black History Month. A “hearts and craft” activity will accompany discussion. 
  • Black Love photobooth tabling 
    • Feb. 14-16 | 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second floor of the AMU 
    • Take pictures to showcase your black love 
  • Soulful Serenity: Nurturing Black Self-Love through Meditation 
    • Thursday, Feb. 15 | 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the AMU Henke Lounge 
    • In honor of Black Love Week, students will learn how to quiet their inner critic and embrace self-love and Black excellence through self-compassion, affirmations and meditation with the Counseling Center’s therapist, Marie Humes, LPC-IT. Come as you are. No previous experience in meditation or mindfulness is required. Self-care bags will be provided. 
  • Gallery Talk with Bill Tennessen
    • Wednesday, Feb. 21 | 11 a.m. in the Haggerty Museum of Art
    • Photographer Bill Tennessen will present a gallery talk about the Haggerty’s current exhibition as part of GROW. Register online.
  • Black History Month Tea with the LGBTQ+ Resource Center 
    • Wednesday, Feb. 21 | 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the AMU Lunda Room 
    • Celebrate the rich history of ball culture and learn how ballroom illuminates the intersections of race, gender and sexuality in society. Contact the LGBTQ+ Resource Center with any questions. 
  • Voices Unheard: Understanding Black Culture’s Relationship with Drug Use 
    • Thursday, Feb. 22 | Noon to 1 p.m. in the AMU Henke Lounge 
    • Join a discussion surrounding the impact of substance abuse on black culture and strategies on how we can navigate our college years while staying true to our personal goals and values. The event will be led by AOD Counselor Coordinator Dominique Balderas, SAC-IT, LPC-IT. 
  • Alumni meet and greet 
    • Friday, Feb. 23 | 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the AMU Lunda Room

  • Black Joy Exhibit 
    • Feb. 26-March 1 | 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second floor of the AMU 
    • This exhibit exemplifies the joy and compilation of Black culture at Marquette. Contact cei@marquette.edu with any questions. 
  • Food for the Soul 
    • Wednesday, Feb. 28 | 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the AMU’s Innovation Kitchen 
    • Enjoy a taste of soul through desserts. Come for food and conversation as participants talk about soul food and its connection to the Black community. 
  • “Things Your History Teacher Didn’t Teach You: Blacks in History” with Derek Mosley 
    • Thursday, Feb. 29 | 12:15 p.m. in Eckstein Hall 
    • Derek Mosley, director of Marquette University Law School’s Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education, will discuss the many contributions of African Americans, conveying that Black History is indeed U.S. History. Registration is required and available online
  • The Black Boy Blooms 
    • Thursday, Feb. 29 | 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the AMU Henke Lounge 
    • This workshop, led by counseling center therapist Kentrell Washington, APSW, is for Black boys to discuss what Black boy joy means for them. It is also intended to engage the topic of Black boy joy as it intersects with mental health and Black masculinity. Self-care bags will be provided. 
  • Bingo in collaboration with the Campus Activities Board and all Black organizations
