Dr. Yi Liu, assistant professor of cancer discovery and regenerative medicine at Nanyang Technological University, will present a seminar titled, “Decrypting cell fate via the lens of intracellular pH dynamics,” on Friday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m. in Wehr Life Sciences 111.

Liu received his Ph.D. degree in cell biology from Marquette under the mentorship of the cilia biologist Dr. Pinfen Yang, where he made significant discoveries in the cilia field by identifying the long-searched key adaptor protein ARMC2 for motile cilia assembly, revealing microtubule dynamics in ciliated green algal cells, and engineering cilia into imaging standards for quantitative fluorescence microscopy. Liu has developed a broad interest in cell biology from cytoskeleton dynamics, stem cell differentiation and lineage specification, to cancer progression, and gained unique expertise in pHi dynamics, organoids, 3D cancer spheroids, and advanced 3D imaging,

Liu is also passionate about science education and communication. As a teaching assistant and a guest lecturer during his Ph.D. and post-doctoral training, Liu actively participated in teaching students at distinct levels, and he gained abundant mentorship experience for students of diverse backgrounds.

The Biological Sciences Department’s Friday Seminar Series is supported by the Scholl Endowment. Eminent scientists are invited to the department to deliver seminars, and students have ample opportunity to engage these scientists in individual or group conversation.
