Safety Update: June 4, 2026

On the evening of Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the Marquette University Police Department issued a safety update regarding shots fired in the vicinity of 18th Street and Wisconsin Avenue. No one was injured during the incident, and MUPD is actively investigating.

The safety and security of our campus community is our highest priority. MUPD is sharing additional information about last night’s incident to raise awareness and help community members make informed choices that support their safety and the well-being of others. Immediate safety measures are also being implemented to deter problematic behaviors and enhance safety in the Wells Street area.

During the incident last night, two groups of suspects not affiliated with the university exchanged gunfire. Following further investigation by MUPD this morning, it was determined that two nearby buildings were struck. No one was injured.

The university takes this very seriously and is enacting the following immediate steps to reduce the ability for individuals to congregate at these locations:

  • MUPD will have a significant police presence on Wells Street in the evenings and is adding additional mobile lighting and security cameras in the area.
  • Tenants in university-owned buildings along Wells Street will close earlier in the evening for the time being. MUPD is continuing to work with our tenants on additional security measures.
  • The university parking lot located at 16th Street and Wells Street, Campus Town Lot 2, will be closed from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night moving forward.
  • The university is working with the City of Milwaukee on additional safety measures.

Marquette is grateful to its tenant businesses for working with us to ensure a safe environment for all in our neighborhood.

MUPD encourages all members of the Marquette community and neighborhood to follow safety tips and utilize the free EagleExpress ride service.

If you observe any suspicious behavior or fear for your safety at any time, contact MUPD at (414) 288-1911 or through the mobile blue light feature on the Eagle Eye app.
