Marquette students and faculty are encouraged to apply for three funding opportunities available through the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute (NMDSI). These programs support collaborative research, curriculum development and student research experiences in data science and related fields.
NMDSI’s research is grounded in a commitment to advancing responsible AI and data practices that are ethical, equitable and focused on real-world impact. Across its programs, the institute addresses ethical concerns and works to mitigate bias in AI and data use, helping promote trust, transparency, inclusion and shared prosperity across the region, community and industry.
The 2027 proposal submission deadline is Sunday, Oct.18. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.

- The Paving ROADS Seed Fund Program fosters innovative research collaborations in data science, encouraging cross-disciplinary partnerships and projects with potential societal impact, while aiming to enhance research capacity and secure subsequent external funding.
- The Pioneer Collaborative Curricula Program aims to integrate innovative data science education into existing curricula, fostering interdisciplinary course development and enabling students from all academic backgrounds to gain foundational skills in data science.
- The Student Research Scholars Program offers hands-on data science research opportunities to students, pairing them with faculty mentors to work on interdisciplinary projects and gain practical experience while receiving financial support.
NMDSI leverages the unique strengths and resources of partner institutions like Marquette University to cultivate a dynamic tech talent ecosystem, advancing southeastern Wisconsin as a national hub for technology and research.
