Save Your Tooth Month gets state recognition thanks to Marquette faculty dentist

May is Save Your Tooth Month, an annual celebration of the dentists responsible for saving teeth. It’s now officially recognized in the State of Wisconsin, thanks to the efforts of one Marquette School of Dentistry faculty member.

Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim, clinical professor and predoctoral program director of endodontics, submitted a request to Governor Tony Evers’ office in February, and was delighted to receive an official proclamation by the state at the end of April.

“Maintaining proper oral hygiene and preserving natural teeth are essential for oral health, and each year, more than 15 million teeth are treated and saved through root canal or endodontic treatment,” a line of the proclamation reads.

Save Your Tooth Month, commemorated by the American Association of Endodontists, highlights the importance of preserving natural teeth whenever treatment is possible. It helps educate the public that root canal treatment is a safe, effective and predictable way to relieve pain, treat infection and maintain natural teeth rather than extract them.

“I am honored that Governor Tony Evers recognized May as Save Your Tooth Month in Wisconsin,” Ibrahim says. “This proclamation is an important opportunity to raise public awareness about the value of saving natural teeth and the role endodontists play in preserving oral health, function and quality of life.”
