“Diffraction,” a full-length feature film produced in the Diederich College of Communication, is now available on Amazon Prime. The film was a collaboration between College of Communication students and Heron Media, Kris Holodak’s production company.
“Feature films are giant, interdisciplinary, collaborative projects,” said Holodak, an associate professor of digital media and performing arts. “For many of our students, this is a bigger project than they are likely to do in their professional careers. I am very proud of the effort they put forward and am very happy with the result.”
The film follows Jackie, a university janitor who meets a professor working on a medical breakthrough. However, Jackie comes to realize the renowned professor’s work is a secret weapons project, and she must outwit the smartest person on campus before more people die.
Students comprised roughly 70 percent of the production team for the movie. They worked directly with professional actors and industry department heads to bring the story to life. Work on “Diffraction” was integrated into classes ranging from Feature Film Production to Computer Aided Design to Editing Techniques.
“It’s an amazing opportunity to get to experience something like this,” said Nathan Berry, a Class of 2024 graduate. “You usually wouldn’t have the opportunity to work on something like this without physically traveling to L.A. or Chicago or New York.”
WISN featured the students three years ago while they were working on the film.
