Dear alumni and friends of the Diederich College of Communication:
This August, the college faculty and staff started our semester with a workshop that asked what lies ahead for communication as a professional pursuit. We were joined by alumni whose careers span the spectrum (editors, producers, advertising executives, consultants, performers). The conversations were engaging and fruitful. The workshop highlighted the reality that keeping our programs fresh and relevant is both daunting and exciting. We keyed in on the what remains constant about communication and what is ever changing in our students, in our professions, and our world.
In this digital issue of Marquette Comm, we are excited to share stories of how we are adapting to changes in our field through new curriculum, faculty, and research. We highlight one of our newest minors, sports communication. This program allows students to merge theory and practice to prepare to apply communication skills to sport contexts. In addition, you will read about our new faculty members in the journalism department who are bringing their real-world experiences and research to our classrooms. Finally, we are featuring Dr. Larry Xu, whose research focused on artificial intelligence and fundraising is bringing to light new ways to use our communication skills. While we adapt to changes, one thing remains true. Communication has a seat at the table of addressing the challenges of our world, and we continue to ask our students to engage.
Keep in touch,
Sarah Feldner
