A message from College of Health Sciences Dean William E. Cullinan

Dear alumni and friends of Marquette’s College of Health Sciences:

I hope you have enjoyed your summer and had plenty of time to spend with family, friends and loved ones. The academic year is upon us once again, and with Marquette’s first day of classes only a few short days away, our devoted faculty and staff and I are eager to have students back in classrooms and labs as they develop into the next generation of healthcare leaders.

To that end, our first story is about Dr. Jenya Iuzzini-Seigel, associate professor of speech language pathology, and her research program on childhood apraxia of speech. Iuzzini-Seigel is a world-renowned scientist, regularly lecturing at conferences across the globe to share her insights into one of the most debilitating speech disorders facing children. Now, she’s earned one of the largest National Institute of Health grants in university history to help diagnose children earlier and faster.

While we strive to embed the concept of cura personalis into graduates of all our programs, one alumna who exemplifies this daily in her work is Dr. Leslie Buckner, PT ’02. Buckner is the director of rehabilitation services at Methodist Hospitals in the Chicago area and focuses her work on patients who have fallen through the healthcare systems cracks. As an administrator, she is tirelessly working to ensure patients are receiving the best treatment possible and that her staff are well-equipped to practice at their peak.

Lastly, we celebrate the Speech and Hearing Clinic’s Bilingual English-Spanish Specialization which is turning 25 this summer. For the last quarter century, BIES has been helping Spanish-speaking children develop their language skills during therapy sessions that are rare in Wisconsin and in the Midwest. BIES’ longevity and success are examples of Marquette’s clinics showcasing the college’s commitment to our mission and Catholic, Jesuit values and something I truly treasure in our college.

I hope you enjoy this edition of Marquette Health Sciences and encourage you to send ideas for stories that highlight exceptional alumni or accomplishments as we continue to educate the next generation of mission-driven leaders, and to advance The Science that Heals.

Have a great fall,
Dr. William E. Cullinan
