Dear colleagues and friends,
In my last message, I shared what an exciting time this is for research and scholarship at Marquette University. Here I share a few more examples of the faculty expertise, ingenuity and collaboration that drive this research and scholarship to new heights of excellence in a full range of disciplines. These examples of the breadth of accomplishment of our campus community of scholars include an NEH-supported research volume on the lasting cultural meaning of art created during the Spanish Civil War; an NIH R01-funded project that improves mobility in people with multiple sclerosis through novel high-intensity training that challenges their sense of balance; and new research on the promise and risks that generative AI models bring to efforts to crowdfund for medical emergencies. A measure of our growing research activity is seen in Marquette’s reported research expenditures. We reported research and development expenditures for fiscal year 2023 that reached a new university record, $47.8 million. Marquette has now seen year-to-year increases in 10 of the last 13 years (including a nearly 18% rise in FY23) and has more than doubled its R&D expenditures over the last 10 years. I hope you appreciate these articles, and I look forward to sharing my last message of this year with more research advances from Marquette later this spring.
