Campus asked to ‘Let your light shine’ during Mission Week

Theme will be incorporated throughout the year, connected to university pillars

To kickstart a new era of Mission Week this fall, the Office of Mission and Ministry has chosen the theme for this academic year as “Let your light shine” from Matthew 5:16.

Mission Week begins Saturday, Sept. 26, with Family Weekend Mass at the Church of the Gesu and runs through Friday, Oct. 2.

“We take this theme from a section of the Gospel of Matthew in which Jesus challenges his followers to a deeper commitment to discipleship,” said Rev. Jim Pribek, S.J., acting vice president for mission and ministry. “He pictures this ‘yes’ as a brilliant light. Marquette has a culture of deep dedication to the Jesuit Mission, and this year’s theme celebrates that and seeks to inspire an ever-greater devotion to the people and the mission we encounter here.”

The format of Mission Week is also changing. In addition to events hosted by the Office of Mission and Ministry during Mission Week, the university will celebrate the theme year-round with events tied to the university’s four pillars: excellence, faith, leadership and service.

Each pillar has a dedicated time frame: excellence from September through October; faith from November through December; leadership from January through February; and service from March through May.

“We’re excited to bring the Mission Week theme with us throughout the academic year and incorporate fun new events to discern how we can shine all year round,” Pribek said.

Light your light shine thematic statement

Light offers warmth without condition.
Direction without demand.
Clarity without judgment.

This is how we are called to be with one another at Marquette.
To welcome each person we meet.
To accompany one another along the path.
To value every individual as worthy of our full attention.

When we let our light shine, we create a campus
where no one disappears into the crowd.
Where doubt is met with faith.
Where we pursue excellence because we owe each other our best.

We are Marquette.
When we bring our light,
we shine for the glory of God,
and the good of all.
