Dr. Hu Yang, chair of the Marquette University and Medical College of Wisconsin Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering and Dr. Robert D. and Dr. Patricia E. Kern Professor in Biotechnology and Bioengineering, has been inducted to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE)’s College of Fellows, the organization announced on Monday, April 13.
Election to the AIMBE College of Fellows is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to medical and biological engineers and is comprised of the top two percent of engineers in these fields. College membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering and medicine research, practice, or education” and to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of medical and biological engineering or developing/implementing innovative approaches to bioengineering education.”
Yang was nominated, reviewed and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for “innovative contributions to pharmaceutical formulation and engineering, and to advancing biomedical engineering education and training.”
“This is a tremendous honor for Dr. Yang and well-deserved for his contributions to the fields of biomedical engineering and pharmaceuticals as a researcher and educator,” said Dr. Kristina Ropella, Opus Dean of the Opus College of Engineering. “I am grateful to have Dr. Yang leading our Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering with Marquette and MCW; his expertise amplifies the work of our faculty and learning for our students.”
Through 21 years of research, Yang has conducted groundbreaking work in nanomedicine, gene and drug delivery and pharmaceutical engineering. He holds five U.S. patents and has published more than 120 refereed journal articles, with over 6900 citations to date. He is a recipient of the Early Career Coulter Translational Research Award and the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award.
A formal induction ceremony was held during the AIMBE Annual Event at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel in Arlington, Virginia on April 13, 2026. Dr. Yang was inducted along with 175 colleagues who make up the AIMBE College of Fellows Class of 2026.
