Each year, National TRIO Day celebrates the life-changing impact of federally funded outreach and student support programs created under the Higher Education Act of 1965. The original TRIO programs — Upward Bound (1964), Talent Search (1965) and Student Support Services (1968) — were designed to expand college access and promote degree completion for students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation college students and students with disabilities. What began as three pioneering initiatives has grown into eight programs serving students nationwide, all united by a shared commitment to educational opportunity and achievement.
At Marquette University, TRIO-funded initiatives within the Educational Opportunity Program have become enduring pillars of our campus community. They reflect Marquette’s Catholic, Jesuit mission and steadfast commitment to walk with those on the margins, affirming the dignity, potential and promise of every student. By cultivating access, belonging, persistence and success, TRIO programs embody our call to be a university that opens doors, accompanies students throughout their academic journeys and advances educational equity in service of the common good.
Join EOP and its five TRIO programs — Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math & Science, Educational Talent Search, Student Support Services and the Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program — to honor the enduring legacy and transformative power of TRIO.
