Soup with Substance: Carrying the Midwife’s Bag Across the Atlantic, Oct. 29

Melanie Lorentz, Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History at Marquette University.

Soup with Substance will feature a presentation by Melanie Lorenz, a Ph.D. candidate in Marquette University’s Department of History, titled “Carrying the Midwife’s Bag Across the Atlantic: German Immigrant Midwives and Their Struggle to Preserve Their Professional Identity in Nineteenth-Century America,” on Wednesday, Oct. 29, from noon to 12:50 p.m. in the AMU Lunda Room.

Lorenz will explore how German immigrant midwives in the United States engaged with the professionalization of midwifery in Germany and sought to introduce similar practices in their new communities. Her talk highlights the cultural exchange of medical knowledge and the determination of women striving to sustain their professional roles during a period of significant social change.

Inspired by the “roundtable discussions” of Peter Maurin and the Catholic Worker Movement, Soup with Substance invites members of the Marquette community to share a simple meal of soup and bread while reflecting on issues of faith, justice, and social concern.

Hosted by Campus Ministry, the series offers nearly 30 gatherings each academic year that foster dialogue around the intersection of faith, justice and community. This presentation is co-sponsored by Campus Ministry and the Graduate School.

Departments or student organizations interested in suggesting future Soup with Substance speakers or topics are encouraged to contact Steve Blaha in Campus Ministry.
