From the President’s Desk – October 2025

One of the primary responsibilities of my role as president is sharing the Marquette story. The Charting Our Course initiative that kicked off earlier this fall has allowed me to do this with stakeholder groups across the country. My recent visits with alumni, friends of the university, and parents of current, former and prospective students in Washington and California have been incredibly rewarding. People are enthusiastic about the momentum we are experiencing and the opportunity to connect with others in the extended Marquette family. I am grateful to learn how their Marquette education and experience led to personal and professional transformations.

Closer to home, the Marquette Club of St. Camillus, located in Wauwatosa, features a wonderful mix of residents who are alumni, parents of alumni, retired faculty and staff, and Jesuits. I enjoyed visiting with them earlier this month and I can report they are still passionate about the university’s success, as we concluded my visit with a robust “We Are Marquette!”

It was a treat to be joined by Father Albert DiUlio, S.J., Marquette’s 21st president, and Father Robert Wild, S.J., Marquette’s 22nd president, at St. Camillus, where they both live. I appreciate the wisdom and insight that Father Wild and Father DiUlio share with me whenever I spend time with them, and the fact that they keep the Marquette community in their daily prayers.

Marquette is also uniquely represented by five graduate Students in Residence at St. Camillus. I enjoyed learning about their studies and how they build community by leading a variety of activities for other residents. Dr. Stacey Barnes of the College of Nursing coordinates this program that is a fascinating application of intergenerational community living.

This month on WTMJ’s The Upswing: Dr. Manal Hamdan, School of Dentistry

We read and hear how AI continues to expand into every industry, even dental care and technology. To share insight how we are preparing future dentists and dental professionals, Dr. Manal Hamdan, assistant professor and director of the Predoctoral Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in the School of Dentistry, joined me and Jeff Sherman on this month’s episode of 620 WTMJ’s “The Upswing.”

Dr. Hamdan explained how AI improves patient results and increases efficiency and shared updates on other advancements in dental care technology.

I appreciate this monthly opportunity to showcase the expertise of our faculty and engage in discussions about timely topics.

More impressive rankings for Marquette

The Wall Street Journal/College Pulse ranked Marquette the top university in Wisconsin for the second straight year and 82nd in the nation in its 2026 Best College rankings. The university also was ranked among the top 75 institutions in the country for best salaries for graduates.

A comprehensive list of the university’s rankings is available at this link.

New economic impact report helps tell the Marquette story

A new economic impact report has been published that quantifies how Marquette students, faculty, staff and alumni make an impact locally, nationally and internationally. The report synthesizes data and facts that will help us all tell the Marquette story more effectively. The report is available here

Community conversations continue

Another October highlight has been continuing conversations with community leaders about mutually beneficial collaborations. Thanks to Trustee Nancy Hernandez who facilitated this discussion that explored the next steps to expand the university’s strategic partnerships.

Mark Your Calendar: Presidential Address scheduled for Wednesday, November 12, 10 a.m.

I hope you will be able to join me for the 2025 Presidential Address on Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the AMU Monaghan Ballrooms. The Gospel Choir, under the direction of Ms. Debbie Duff, will sing two songs, beginning at 9:55 a.m.

Open Your Heart Food Drive underway now

In conjunction with the Presidential Address, please consider supporting the Backpack Program, the university’s on-campus food pantry, by donating food or toiletry items to the Open Your Heart Food Drive. The Backpack Program is open to any Marquette student who needs affordable, nutritious food and other essential household items. Special thanks to our partners at Sendik’s for supporting the drive.

Food drive items can be dropped off at 10 campus locations, or in the AMU Monaghan Ballrooms prior to the start of the Nov. 12 Presidential Address. You also can purchase items through the Backpack Program’s Amazon Wishlist.

The Brewers’ record-breaking season certainly generated pride throughout Milwaukee and Wisconsin. It’s especially satisfying when you can beat your rivals in post-season play. Advancing to the NLCS exceeded the expectations of most fans and experts, but that’s why you play the games and don’t solely rely on pre-season predictions!
