A message from Dr. Leigh van den Kieboom, associate dean of the College of Education

Dear friends of the College of Education,

At Marquette University’s College of Education, we take great pride in preparing educators, administrators, and mental health and student affairs professionals who go forth to make a difference in classrooms, clinics and communities around the world. Every day, our students and faculty live out Marquette’s mission to Be The Difference, shaping not only minds, but hearts.

In this digital issue of Marquette Education, we highlight some of the important work being done in the college to lift communities in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, across the U.S. and around the world.

Our lead story details how the College of Education was prepared for a statewide mandate for teachers to use a phonics-based regimen, having long woven science-based reading strategies into our curriculum and given students hands-on experience at the Hartman Literacy and Learning Center.

Also spotlighted in this edition is a new collaboration between Marquette and Emplify Health by Bellin, making it easier for residents of northeast Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to access quality mental health care in a time where these communities would overwise face a shortage.

Finally, we share the story of one of our many impactful alumni, Santiago Navarro, who as principal of Bruce-Guadalupe Community School on Milwaukee’s south side is helping students set their sights on long-term success — guiding them to build the skills, confidence and mindset needed to thrive in high school, college and beyond.

Thank you for your continued support of the College of Education. I would love to hear from you about ways we can further make an impact.

Dr. Leigh van den Kieboom

Professor and Associate Dean of the College of Education
