Importance of oral health; added value of School of Dentistry’s Faculty Practice

While the teeth, gums, tongue and surrounding tissues make up just a small area of the body, the health of this area has an enormous impact on overall health. In fact, oral health can significantly impact the brain, heart, lungs and other internal organs. Periodontal disease (gum disease) may double someone’s risk of a fatal heart attack and triple the likelihood of having a stroke. Additionally, people with gum disease often have higher blood sugar levels and/or uncontrolled diabetes. Furthermore, bacteria from infected gums and teeth can lead to respiratory infections like bronchitis, pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Over 40% of U.S. adults age 30 and older have some form of gum disease. Symptoms of gum disease can include reddish gums, bleeding, gum soreness, bad breath and gum recession. It can spread to the bones surrounding the gums if left untreated, which can make it extremely painful to chew.

Ways to prevent gum disease include:

  • Brush teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice per day
  • Floss daily
  • Use antiseptic mouthwash (not recommended for children under six)
  • Avoid smoking and tobacco
  • Regularly visit dentist for cleanings and exams
