April 25, 2025 update
Following published reports of the restoration of thousands of U.S. visa registrations for foreign students across the country, Marquette University can confirm that the one international student in the Marquette Graduate School who had previously had his SEVIS record terminated — which had put his F-1 status in question — has had his SEVIS record restored to active status.
The Office of International Education is continuing to monitor changes in F-1 visa policies and status. The office is in regular communication with the international student community to provide the most up-to-date information, resources and support.
April 10, 2025, update
Given recent media coverage of federal actions that affect international students’ visa status across the country, including detentions and visa revocations, Marquette would like to make clear that we are not aware of federal law enforcement activity on campus.
As a Catholic, Jesuit institution, Marquette remains steadfast in its commitment to serve our international students and scholars — who enrich our culture with a diversity of voices — as a welcoming learning community that is open to people from a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives. The university is also committed to following the law and related Marquette policies with respect to immigration enforcement actions by U.S. officials.
Marquette is aware that one international student in the Graduate School has had their F-1 visa terminated. The exact reason for the termination is not clear. The Office of International Education is monitoring the situation and is in regular communication with the international student. In addition, OIE is regularly communicating with Marquette students who are on F-1 and J-1 visas to provide them with updates and resources, as well as additional information on some of the recent enforcement activities, actions they can take related to their legal status, and the latest information on OIE’s continued efforts to monitor and update on this developing situation. International students should contact OIE with any questions.
If outside law enforcement comes to campus, it has always been Marquette’s policy to direct non-MUPD officials to MUPD first to verify there is a legitimate, lawful request and then to respond as required under the law.
If you are in a Marquette building and are approached by an official from an outside law enforcement agency who requests access to university facilities, students or student education records, contact MUPD at 414-288-1911 and ask the non-MUPD law enforcement official to wait until an MUPD officer arrives or direct them to the MUPD office at 749 North 16th St. Do not physically block or interfere with their entry/enforcement action.
For more information, consult this guidance for interacting with non-MUPD law enforcement agents.
The university will continue to share updates on executive orders and federal actions affecting higher education in Marquette Today. Guidance and resources are available and updated regularly.
