Dr. Lisa C. Hanson receives Nora Finnigan Werra Faculty Achievement Award

Dr. Lisa C. Hanson, Klein Endowed Professor of Nursing and associate director of the Nurse-Midwifery Program, was named the 2025 Association of Marquette University Women Nora Finnigan Werra Faculty Achievement Award recipient.

She will be honored at the AMUW & Institute for Women’s Leadership Awards Conferral on Wednesday, April 23, at 5 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union.

Those interested in attending the event should register online by Wednesday, April 16.

Hanson co-founded the midwifery program in 1993 and has served as a faculty member at Marquette for 32 years. She also co-founded the Aurora Sinai Midwifery and Wellness Center clinical practice in 1987, from which she retired in 2016.

Hanson leads several probiotics research teams and has received funding from the National Institutes of Health for a clinical trial of a probiotic intervention to reduce Group B Streptococcus colonization. She is widely considered an expert in antenatal probiotic interventions and has numerous publications on this topic, as well as low-technology approaches to women’s health care and labor and birth.

Hanson is the lead editor/author for the latest edition of “Simkin’s Labor Progress Handbook” and is an associate editor of the Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health.

Hanson has mentored all levels of students, junior faculty colleagues and faculty colleagues seeking promotion and tenure. She describes mentoring as a natural extension of midwifery.
