A message from Klingler College of Arts & Sciences Dean Heidi Bostic

Dear alumni and friends of Marquette’s Klingler College of Arts & Sciences,

This issue highlights the incredible work happening across our college – spanning continents, disciplines and generations. From carrying out ecological research in South Africa to integrating Ignatian discernment into education to reconnecting an Indigenous community with its history, these projects exemplify the impact of our faculty, students and alumni.

Dr. Nate Lemoine and his team are leading a groundbreaking study on megacarcass ecology, exploring how elephant deaths shape entire ecosystems. With an international team, including Marquette grad students, their work sheds light on the vital role of large herbivores in nature. A forthcoming documentary will bring this research to a broader audience, deepening our understanding of conservation.

Closer to home, Dr. Liz Angeli and Dr. Lezlie Knox are helping students and faculty apply Ignatian discernment to their academic and professional journeys. By weaving Jesuit principles into career planning and course work, they empower students and faculty to align their academic pursuits with personal purpose. Angeli’s leadership has resonated across the university, reinforcing our mission to develop reflective, ethical leaders.

Meanwhile, recent graduate Alex Gambacorta’s discovery in Marquette’s holdings of the Bureau of Catholic Indian Mission archives led to a powerful reconnection. Finding photos from a mission school where she once taught, she worked with community members to return these historical images to their Indigenous community in Montana. Her story is a powerful testament to how humanities research can make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

These stories remind us that our mission extends beyond the classroom. Whether through scientific exploration, ethical education or historical justice, our community is making a lasting difference. I invite you to read more and celebrate the excellence that defines A&S.

Sincerely,

Dr. Heidi Bostic
