Since 2013, Marquette University has partnered with the United Way each fall break to provide services in the Alumni Memorial Union to homeless community members. Marquette’s faculty and staff are invited to guide the guests and connect them with resources provided throughout the AMU on Thursday, Oct. 17.
This personal encounter is very meaningful and helps humanize people. This companionship reflects most concretely the Jesuit’s Apostolic Preference of “walking with the poor.”
To ponder more deeply on how these encounters have touched our hearts and understand how it’s connected to our Jesuit identity, there will be a time for reflection after a morning of service and provided lunch. For departments looking for a mission-driven volunteer opportunity and reflection for their team, this is a ready-made service opportunity without travel arrangements and additional expenses.
