A Halloween message from Dr. Chris Navia, acting vice president for belonging and student affairs

Dear students,

Dr. Chris Navia

With Halloween weekend coming up, I want to share some reminders to help you have fun while remaining responsible.

Halloween-themed events are occurring across campus, including Halloween trivia at the Union Sports Annex on Thursday at 9 p.m. and a screening of “Hocus Pocus” with interactive trivia and prizes at the Varsity Theatre on Friday at 8 p.m. There are also a pair of soccer games at Valley Fields this weekend: the men’s team hosts Akron Saturday at 7 p.m., while the women’s team takes on Xavier on Sunday at 1 p.m.

As you take part in festivities, please be considerate of your well-being and of others. Remember that underage drinking and abuse or high-risk use of alcohol and other drugs is counter to Marquette’s values of respect for self, others, property and authority, and often disrupts our ability to treat one another with dignity and respect.

Be mindful of making choices that protect our community’s sense of safety and security, especially for those who choose to abstain.

Be mindful of how your costume might affect others. If you plan to dress up, think about how you’re representing yourself and whether your costume is representative of our culture of inclusion. Remember to also be practical – avoid costumes that make it difficult to see, move or walk.

Ensure you’re aware of your surroundings. Obey traffic signals and only cross when the pedestrian light indicates a walk sign. Remain cognizant of vehicles, and don’t assume they will stop. Make eye contact with drivers, don’t just look at the vehicle.

Know that Marquette is vigilant about doing everything possible to keep you safe.

  • MUPD and other local law enforcement agencies will have increased patrols over the weekend.
  • We expect students to be respectful and responsible on campus and off. Laws concerning underage drinking, public intoxication, open containers, illegal substances and public disturbance will be enforced.

Take advantage of resources.

  • Download and use MUPD’s safety app, EagleEye, which features one-click location services and direct connection to campus police.
  • Take advantage of the Eagle Express transportation system, use the Blue Light phones and travel in groups.
  • Save MUPD’s contact information in your phone: (414) 288-1911 for emergencies and (414) 288-6800 for non-emergencies.

Look out for one another.

  • Many of you have gone through bystander intervention and Red Watch Band training. Put this training to use if necessary.
  • The university adheres to its Good Samaritan Policy, and we expect students to uphold the community expectations expressed in the Student Conduct Code — respect for self and for others — and to comply with municipal laws.
  • Marquette also has resources available if a community member needs help.

I hope you take these messages seriously and use your best judgment to have a safe and fun Halloween.

Sincerely,

Dr. Chris Navia
Acting Vice President for Belonging and Student Affairs
