Funded by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary L. Nohl Fund and Joy Engine and administered by the Lynden, the Mary L. Nohl Fund Fellowships for Individual Artists provide unrestricted funds for artists to create new work or complete work in progress.

Since 2003, the program has made a significant investment in the greater Milwaukee arts community, encouraging artists to live and make work here. The fellowships also create an opportunity to promote local artistic production to a national audience through the jurying process and culminating exhibition.

Established artists include:

  • Mikal Floyd-Pruitt
  • Janelle VanderKelen
  • Emerging artists
  • Siara Berry
  • Fatima Laster
  • Alayna N. Pernell

The 2023 fellows were chosen from a field of 157 applicants by a panel of three jurors: Jadine Collingwood, assistant curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Thomas James, independent curator and executive director of The Last Resort Artist Retreat, Baltimore, Maryland; and Kimberly Kitada, Jedel Family Foundation Curatorial Fellow, Charlotte Street Foundation, Kansas City, Missouri.

This exhibition is curated by Emilia Layden, acting director of the Haggerty Museum of Art.
