Juneteenth Weekend kick-off celebration on Central Mall, June 17

An icon graphic representing A Culture of Inclusion from the Beyond Boundries Strategic PlanCome together with Marquette and Milwaukee community members for a Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 17, from noon to 4 p.m. on Central Mall. The free, public event is hosted by Dr. Kristin Haglund, the Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J. Endowed Chair and professor in the College of Nursing, and the Milwaukee nonprofit organization Safe & Sound.

Volunteer opportunities are available; those interested can sign up online.

The celebration will feature a variety of musical acts, including DJ DRiPSweat and performers on a live youth stage: Bembé Drum & Dance, Xalaat Africa Drum and Dance for Life, School of Rock and vocal artists Jonah Danae, Big Perro, and several others. Performers are ages 11-17.

Free food trucks, t-shirts and kids’ activities from Discovery World and the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum will also be available, as well as resource tables featuring community organizations and Juneteenth history.
