REMINDER: Faculty and staff with Windows 10 PC computers must update to version 1909; those who have yet to update will receive it automatically starting this Friday

January 4, 2021

Before the start of spring semester, all Marquette-owned and ITS-managed Windows 10 computer operating systems must be updated to version 1909. This update will provide greater end-user efficiency and enhance data security.

To see what version of Windows 10 you have, view these instructions.

Those whose computers require the update will also be notified directly; ITS is contacting faculty and staff by department.

About the update

  • How long will it take?
The update is estimated to take between 30 minutes to two hours to complete and will require you to restart your computer several times during the the process.
  • How do I complete the update?
If your computer is using a Windows 10 version less than 1909, there are two ways to complete the update:

    • Option 1: Do a manual update
From Dec. 10, 2020, through Jan. 7, 2021, ITS will make the feature update available to faculty and staff who need it, allowing you to install the update at your own convenience. ITS will provide a basic set of instructions.
    • Option 2: An automatic update will take place on Jan. 8 if you skip the manual update
If you do not update your computer by Thursday, Jan. 7 the update will automatically install on your computer beginning Friday, Jan. 8, at 1 a.m. (CT). Automatic updates will occur in the background on a rolling basis. Please note that under this option, computer restarts will occur automatically, and the update may occur any time while the Windows 10 computer is on. If you opt for Option 2, please be sure to leave your computer on at the end of the day on Jan. 7.

Going forward, the university will complete these operating system “feature updates” each fall.

See the Annual Windows Feature Update site for more information.

For all IT-related questions and concerns, contact the ITS Help Desk.
