Students and employees reminded of safety alert process

June 9, 2020

The university community is reminded of the process for receiving text message alerts in the case that a safety alert is sent to campus.

Please remember that safety alerts are sent to Marquette students, faculty and staff when there is an active threat to campus. A text notification is sent first, followed by an email with additional information about the incident.

TEXT ALERTS
To make sure you are signed up to receive text alerts, read the information below pertaining to each audience:

For students
To receive MUPD safety alerts, as well as weather-related closing information, students must enroll in the university’s emergency text messaging system by entering their cell phone number in the Profile tile – Contact Details in CheckMarq. The phone number listed must be labeled as “mobile” in order to receive texts – if it’s listed as “home,” students won’t receive text alerts.

Please note: If the student’s family home phone number or a parent’s cell phone number is listed here, they will not safety text alerts. Students should change this in CheckMarq.

For parents
The program Marquette uses to send safety alert texts to students does not allow parents to sign up to receive alerts directly. However, safety alerts are posted in real time to MUPD’s Twitter account, @MarquettePD. All reports are also posted on Marquette Today.

For faculty and staff
To opt in to receive text alerts from the university, faculty and staff must make sure their personal phone number is listed in the “Personal Information” section of MyJob. The phone number listed must be labeled as “mobile” in order to receive texts – if it’s listed as “home” you won’t receive text alerts.

EMAIL UPDATES
An email with more information is sent after a text alert. MUPD has also now shares an additional safety update for some incidents that warrant follow-up communication. Learn more about this protocol. All safety related emails are sent to all current Marquette students, faculty and staff.

All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to download MUPD’s Eagle Eye safety app and follow MUPD on Facebook and Twitter for safety updates.
