University revises how and when MUPD shares updates with the campus community

In response to feedback and changing communication best practices, the Marquette University Police Department and the Office of Marketing and Communication have revised the protocol for how and when MUPD shares updates with the campus community.

Safety alerts (sent by text with a follow-up email) will continue to be reserved only for instances when there is an active threat to campus.

Knowing there are some safety-related incidents that may warrant communication to campus even though they do not constitute an active threat, MUPD and OMC will be utilizing the Marquette Police email account to send select Updates from MUPD to students, faculty and staff. The emails will come from the mupd@marquette.edu email account with the subject line, “MUPD Update – DESCRIPTION.”

Emails of this nature could include: safety reminders for campus when there is a pattern of crime that necessitates a change in behavior (e.g. phone snatchings or burglaries); when rumors are circulating and factual information needs to be shared; when a photo of a suspect needs to be shared to aid in making an arrest; and select other instances at the professional discretion of MUPD and OMC leadership.

All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to download MUPD’s Eagle Eye safety app and follow MUPD on Facebook and Twitter for safety updates.
