Marquette University Law School and the College of Education will host a program on student achievement, with a focus on reading efforts, on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 12:15 p.m. in Eckstein Hall. The discussion will be led by Alan Borsuk, senior fellow in law and public policy.

The program will examine the current state of reading and literacy education in Milwaukee and across Wisconsin. With the passage of Act 20 in 2023, the introduction of a new Milwaukee Public Schools reading plan, the nationwide rise of “science of reading” legislation and the launch of the Milwaukee Reading Coalition, the topic has taken on renewed urgency.

Joining the conversation are several leading figures in literacy and education, including:

  • Rep. Joel Kitchens, chair of the Assembly Committee on Education
  • Barb Novak, Office of Literacy, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
  • Gabriella Bell Jimenez, academic superintendent of literacy, Milwaukee Public Schools
  • Carrie Streiff-Stuessy, executive director, Forward Scholars

The event is free and open to the public, though registration is required.
Register online by Monday, Dec. 1.

The program is hosted by the Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education and the College of Education.
