Dr. Adriel M. Trott, professor of philosophy at Wabash College, will present the Department of Philosophy’s seminar, “No Islands, No Masters: Aristotle and the Activity of Citizenship” on Friday, Oct. 9, at 3:30 p.m. in Marquette Hall 105.
In this lecture, Trott turns to Aristotle for an alternative to citizenship based on ancestry, ethnicity or place of origin.
Rejecting the idea that political belonging is rooted in bloodline or native soil, Aristotle instead defines citizenship through active participation in civic life and deliberation about justice and the common good. Trott will explore how this understanding of citizenship challenges ethnonationalist views while emphasizing the vital relationship between individuals and the communities they help create and sustain.
