Clouding History: Preparing for Storms Ahead
The cloud has long been a metaphor for what bridges heaven and earth — the known and the unknown, beautiful one day, ominous the next. Today, it has taken on a new dimension as we upload the evidence of human history into the digital cloud. On one hand, it promises endless possibility — a rainbow of knowledge at our fingertips. On the other, it threatens storms, as powerful “rainmakers” shape what we know, how we learn and who gets access.
As scholars and stewards of cultural heritage, how do we protect the real from the hyperreal? Dr. Kim Sajet, the Donna and Donald Baumgartner Director of the Milwaukee Art Museum and former director of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., will share her recent experiences and offer insights into how scholars might begin safeguarding the historical record for future generations.
