Mission volunteers needed for Project Homeless Connect, Oct. 22

Since 2009, the Marquette campus community has united to help those experiencing homelessness as part of Project Homeless Connect. Held in the Alumni Memorial Union since 2013, the event is expected to bring over 600 guests and make city-wide resources and services accessible under one roof for people experiencing housing and food insecurity.

Services include health and dental screenings, housing referrals, haircuts, winter clothing, personal hygiene items and more. Each guest chooses their services according to their needs.

Morning, afternoon or full-day volunteers are needed. Faculty and staff are invited to accompany the guests and connect them with resources provided throughout the AMU. This personal encounter is very meaningful.

This event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the AMU. If volunteers are looking for a half-day option, the morning shift is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the afternoon shift is from noon to 4 p.m. All volunteers are asked to register by Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Volunteer roles:

  • Guest advocates interact one-on-one or two-on-one with guests throughout the day.
  • Event support: Support with activities such as guest check-in, volunteer and resource provider check-in and handing out supplies and lunch. This role is good for those who may have physical limitations due to the nature of this event.

Students:

Register on the United Way website for the single day event or join Marquette M.A.R.D.I. G.R.A.S. CAMPus Impact over fall break working with Project Homeless Connect and other Milwaukee organizations.

For questions about the student volunteer experience, contact Vevette Hill-Nwagbaraocha, assistant director of Campus Ministry.

Team signups:

If you are a department looking to sign-up an entire team, please send an email to fabercenter@mu.edu and share how many spots you are looking to fill.

It is not guaranteed that teams will all be volunteering in the same area.

A reflection will be held for faculty and staff the following day, Friday, Oct. 23, morning session at 9:30 a.m. or lunch session at noon. They will schedule the session based on the majority response.

Any questions about the volunteer experience can be directed to Kelsey Otero, senior director of community engagement and governmental affairs.
