As students prepare to move into their on- and off-campus residences, the Marquette University Police Department is sharing reminders and resources to keep your residence safe.
- Lock your doors. Remember to lock your doors at all times. A door lock is only effective when it is in use.
- Do not leave doors propped open. Whether in your residence hall or off-campus apartment, do not leave your entry door propped open.
- Do not allow tailgaters into your building. If you do not recognize the person behind you as a neighbor, do not allow them to enter your apartment building or residence hall with you. If you notice a suspicious person loitering near the entrance to your building, consider another entrance and contact MUPD.
- Have an emergency plan. Evaluate exit routes from your residence so you will know how to exit in an emergency.
- Take advantage of Vacant House Watch. MUPD offers its free Vacant House Watch program to students residing in the near-off-campus neighborhood during academic breaks. During break, MUPD officers monitor vacant residences during their routine patrols of the neighborhood.
- Register for a free residence safety assessment with MUPD. Students living off campus can have a MUPD crime prevention officer walk through your residence with you, identifying any security concerns. You will then receive a written report to share with their landlord when addressing those concerns.
