Glenn “Doc” Rivers, Arts ’85, trustee emeriti and former Marquette basketball great, will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame during the enshrinement festivities on Friday, Aug. 14, and Saturday, Aug. 15, in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Rivers, who suited up for Marquette from 1980 to 1983, was known for his tenacious defense and stellar distribution skills. He was a first team Converse All-American in 1982 and an honorable mention Associated Press and United Press International All-American in 1983. A member of the M Club Hall of Fame, his No. 31 was retired in 2004.
Drafted in the second round of the 1983 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks, Rivers averaged 10.9 points, 5.7 assists and 3.0 rebounds over his 13 years.
He went on to a prolific coaching career with stops in Orlando, Boston, the Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia and Milwaukee, earning Coach of the Year in 2000 and an NBA championship in 2008 with the Boston Celtics. Rivers was named among the NBA’s top 15 coaches of all time in 2021 as part of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.
Rivers was elected to Marquette’s Board of Trustees in 2005 and received emeritus status in 2017.
