University implements new shared services model for business operations

Marquette announced today the implementation of a shared services model for business operations. Developed by the offices of the Provost, Finance, Research and Innovation, and Human Resources — and endorsed by the Securing Our Future committee — the model is designed to improve operational consistency and efficiency, strengthen continuity and backup support, enhance strategic financial leadership, and streamline grants management processes.

The shared services model consists of three interconnected units:

Business Services Hub

Reporting to the Office of Finance, the Business Services Hub will provide financial support and manage pre-payroll transactions. Team members will partner closely with Human Resources, Finance, Grants Services and academic units. Denise Hyland, currently business director for Raynor Library, will serve as supervisor of the Business Services Hub and report to Amy Ramminger, assistant director in the Budget Office.

Internal/External Grants Hub

Reporting to the Office of Research and Innovation, the Internal/External Grants Hub will serve as a central resource for faculty award administration, providing a single point of contact for questions related to internal and external awards. The hub will also manage the Graduate School operating budget and work closely with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, the Business Services Hub, and College Financial Services. Steve Celichowski, currently budget director for the Opus College of Engineering, will serve as director for the Grants Hub and report to Dr. Jeanne Hossenlopp, vice president for research and innovation.

College Financial Services

Reporting to both the provost and the deans, College Financial Services will work with the deans on budget responsibilities within the colleges and partner with them to support their strategic priorities. Sally Doyle, assistant provost for academic and financial affairs, will lead College Financial Services and report to Provost Debbie Tahmassebi.

As efficiencies are realized through this model, colleges will transition to a shared business director structure. The new assignments are:

  • Klingler College of Arts and Sciences and the Office of Marketing and Communication: Hans Schultz
  • College of Health Sciences and College of Business Administration: Michelle Raclawski
  • Opus College of Engineering and Diederich College of Communication: Michelle Wales
  • College of Nursing and Raynor Library: Margie Felber

Hub leaders are in the process of placing staff specialists in new roles.

The university anticipates that the full implementation process will take several months; watch Marquette Today for updates.
