On Nov. 16, 1989, six Jesuit priests and two laywomen at the University of Central America in El Salvador were killed by members of the Salvadoran army at their Jesuit residence.
Join Jesuit institutions around the world in commemorating these tragic deaths and celebrating the lives of these beloved members of the Ignatian family.
You can attend the following events in support of the Ignatian Lecture Series and the commemoration of the Jesuit martyrs:
- Sunday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. – Spanish Mass in the Chapel of the Holy Family. A pupusa social will follow in AMU 163. Pupusas are stuffed flatbreads and the national dish of El Salvador.
- Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 4 p.m. – Ignatian Lecture Series featuring Rev. Kevin Burke, S.J., a leading expert in the theology of Ignacio Ellacuría, one of the Jesuit martyrs. His lecture, “Cries of the Heart: Denise Levertov and the UCA Martyrs,” will be held in the Raynor Library Beaumier Suites from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Light refreshments will follow. The event is free and open to all.
- Wednesday, Nov. 19, at noon – Soup with Substance in the AMU Lunda Room, featuring a panel titled “Experiences with the Ignatian Colleagues Program,” including Brian Troyer, vice president for enrollment management, and Lynn Griffith, chief marketing and communication officer, moderated by Rev. Kevin Burke, S.J. Soup with Substance offers a free lunchtime program over a meal of soup and bread to discuss issues of social justice and faith.
- Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 3 to 5:15 p.m. – Prayer and reflection in the Jesuit Residence Garden. Join members of the Marquette Jesuit community in prayer and reflection. Stay for a while or stop by briefly.
