Walking into a gym can be intimidating. You might worry about being judged, doing something wrong or just not fitting in. That’s why the Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility is designed with beginners in mind.
Luis de Zengotita, Marquette’s chief wellness officer says, “Don’t let ‘gymtimidation’ be a barrier to using our space.”
Below, Zengotita shares eight practical, low-pressure ways to ease anxiety and build confidence in this welcoming space.
1. Take a low-pressure tour first
You don’t have to jump into a workout right away. Campus Recreation staff offer guided tours that let you get familiar with the layout. Seeing the space without the pressure to work out can make your first workout feel much less overwhelming.
2. Start small
Take small steps. Start by walking the indoor track, doing a quick workout or going to the third floor for more wellness focused programs like meditation. Small, consistent steps can help you feel more comfortable over time.

3. Use the resources
You don’t have to figure it out on your own. Personal trainers and fitness coaches can help you build a workout plan that fits your goals and experience level. The Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility offers resources for students to get a personal trainer.
There are also beginner friendly group fitness classes where instructors guide you. If going alone feels intimidating, come with a friend or join a student fitness group for a built-in support system.
4. Managing negative thoughts
Many people say they are worried about being judged or stared at in the gym. It’s important to remember that, while many others have the same concerns, the truth is that everyone is focused on themselves.
Everyone was a beginner at one point and many people in the gym, including staff, are more than willing to help you get familiar with the space and equipment.

5. Feeling more comfortable
To feel more comfortable at the gym, try going in the late morning or early afternoon when it’s usually less crowded. Wear whatever makes you feel confident; there’s no need for fancy or expensive gear. Bringing a playlist you enjoy can also help. Music that hypes you up or helps you relax can make the gym feel less overwhelming.
6. Stop the comparison game
It’s easy to feel insecure when you’re constantly seeing extremely fit people online. But social media often doesn’t portray reality. Oftentimes, the people you see online don’t look like that.
Instead of comparing, focus on what your body can do rather than how it looks. Celebrate being able to lift heavier or stretch farther than you did last week. Progress is personal, and fitness looks different for everyone.
7. Build a routine
Build a routine to make the gym feel more comfortable and less intimidating. When something becomes familiar, it naturally becomes less overwhelming. Try going at the same time a few days each week, even if it’s just for a short amount of time.

8. Exercise supports your mental health
Exercise isn’t just about physical health but also mental health. It isn’t only about building strength — movement can also boost your mood, reduce stress and increase your confidence. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins and lowers stress hormones, which can help you feel more emotionally balanced.
Starting the gym doesn’t have to be all or nothing. The Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility offers a supportive environment and plenty of beginner friendly options to help you ease in.
By taking small steps, using available resources and focusing on your own progress, you can start to feel more confident and comfortable in the gym.
