The Marquette community is invited to honor Frederick Douglass’ birthday and Black History Month by taking part in Marquette’s Douglass Day Transcribe-A-Thon on Wednesday, Feb. 14, near the information desk on Raynor Library’s first floor.
Douglass Day is a nationwide program that honors the legacy of Frederick Douglass through the collective action of transcription to raise the accessibility of Black scholars’ and activists’ written works. Transcribe-a-thon participants will gather in the library to work side by side on transcribing the digitized correspondence of Douglass.
The Raynor Memorial Libraries and the Ott Memorial Writing Center have been hosting Douglass Day events since 2018. Past Douglass Day events have focused on the writings of Mary Ann Shadd Cary, Mary Church Terrell, Anna Julia Cooper and the Colored Conventions.
The transcription station will be staffed from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., but individuals interested in participating can drop by anytime that day as their schedule allows. For more information and to RSVP, visit the event website.
