Derek Mosley, a 1995 graduate of Marquette University Law School, began his role as director of the Law School’s Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education in January following a 20-year career as a judge of the Milwaukee Municipal Court.
As Mosley begins his first full academic year with the Lubar Center, he sat down with Marquette Today to talk a bit about his family, his favorite hobbies and the best career advice he’s received.

Wife, Kelly (Law ’95); daughters, Kallan and Kieran; and dogs, Rollo and Leon.
Hobbies and interests:
Officiating weddings, Chicago sports, fishing.

I’m a huge fan of horror movies: “Get Out,” “The Conjuring Series,” “A Quiet Place.”
Heroes:
My heroes are the unnamed men and women of African descent in America from 1619 to 1865.

I really love Iceland.
Biggest career learning experience:
Don’t burn bridges. You’ll be surprised how many times you have to cross the same river.
