Marquette University faculty members will present gallery talks in conjunction with the “J.R.R. Tolkien: The Art of the Manuscript” exhibit, on view through Dec. 23 at the Haggerty Museum of Art.
The talks, held in the Haggerty Museum of Art, are free of charge and open to the public.
- “Tolkien and Old English” by Dr. Jacob Riyeff, teaching assistant professor of English in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences

- As a teacher and publishing poet, Riyeff’s interests include the mutual influence of literature and social realities upon one another throughout history, the history of poetics, media ecology and our relationships as natural creatures with the earth and other species.
- “Tolkien in Popular Culture” by Dr. Gerry Canavan, associate professor, associate chair and director of graduate studies of English in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences
- Tuesday, Nov. 29, noon
- In his work, Canavan seeks to establish science fiction as a cornerstone for literary study and critical theory, as well as to speak to larger questions about the role of the imagination in political and cultural life.
