Bernard Toone, a member of the 1977 Marquette men’s basketball National Championship team and an All-American in 1979, passed away last week after a long battle with cancer.
A four-year letterwinner, Toone memorably scored 18 points in Marquette’s Midwest Regional Final game against Wake Forest on the team’s road to the 1977 title. Two years later, he averaged 18.7 points and 6.7 rebounds as a senior to earn fourth team All-American honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Toone averaged 9.3 points and 4.1 assists in 118 games over his Marquette career. He was selected in the second round of the 1979 NBA draft and played one season for the Philadelphia 76ers.
