How would you describe the book in one sentence?
This book completes the three-volume work on “The Trinity in History” by Robert M. Doran, the late Emmett Doerr Chair in Catholic Systematic Theology.
What was your favorite part of the writing/editing process?
My favorite part of the editing process was the heavy lifting involved in searching for references for some of the citations in the manuscript and the hilarious moment of learning how Doran’s interest in the trinity in history started with his packing Bernard Lonergan’s books.
Where did the idea for this book come from?
I edited the manuscript, Robert M. Doran S.J., who died on Jan. 21, 2021, left behind in response to the demands of his students and Lonergan scholars yearning for the third volume of the Trinity in History.
What do you hope to accomplish with this book?
As his successor as the director of the Marquette Lonergan Project and the director of the International Institute of Method in Theology, editing this volume for me helps in preserving Doran’s legacy and brings to completion his three-volume work on the Trinity in History.
How does this book advance or complement your research and/or teaching at Marquette?
Robert M. Doran spent over twenty-five years editing the Collected Works of Bernard Lonergan S.J., one of the most important theologians of the 20th century. He was a worthy successor of Bernard Lonergan.
This book advances understanding of Bernard Lonergan’s theology and Doran’s grasp of the role of the Trinity, the systematic articulation of the doctrine of the Triune God in history.
This book complements my work in World Christianity and on the relationship between Third World theology and Western theology.
Is this your first book? What is your publishing history?
In addition to editing several books, I have written three: “Lonergan, Social Transformation and Sustainable Human Development,” published by Pickwick Publications in 2013; “African Catholicism and Hermeneutics of Culture,” published by Wipf and Stock in 2014; and “African Perspectives on Culture and World Christianity,” published by Cambridge Scholars in 2017.
I have also co-edited “Two Ways of Being Conscious” and “Intellect Affect and God,” published by Marquette University Press in 2021, and “Christianity and Culture Collision,” published by the Cambridge Scholars in 2016.
