Purple ribbons lining Central Mall this week are part of Marquette’s recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The display, which will remain in place through Oct. 14, helps bring attention to an issue that affects millions of individuals and families each year.
The Office of Health Promotion, Prevention and Advocacy invites campus to wear purple on Thursday, Oct. 15, in support of domestic violence awareness. Domestic violence affects people of every background, and it is often hidden. Most incidents are never reported.
Here is the troubling reality about domestic violence in our communities:
- According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among families.
- More than 3 million children witness domestic violence in their homes every year.
- One in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. The same is true for one in four LGBTQ+ individuals.
- Women ages 20 to 24 are at the greatest risk of becoming victims.
- Each year, one in three women who are victims of homicide is killed by a current or former partner. This month wear purple, take a moment to notice the ribbons and check in on the people around you.
If you or someone you know needs support, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 at 800-799-7233 (or text START to 88788).
