Dr. Sean Farrell of Northern Illinois University will present a lecture on “Our wee Jack is gone: The death of a child, 1857,” on Monday, Nov 2, at 4:30 p.m. in the AMU Henke Lounge.
Farrell is one of the leading Irish historians in the United States. This lecture will highlight the story of the death of the young son of William Johnston of Ballykilbeg. Johnston is perhaps best known as a member of Parliament and as a fierce advocate of the Orange Order. This personal tragedy as remembered in the diaries of the Johnston parents highlights the need to understand such figures as real people whose personal relationships were much more complicated than we sometimes expect.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
